CL club now in talks to beat Rangers to signing Ibrox-linked Scotsman

FC Copenhagen have opened talks with Nottingham Forest to sign Rangers target Scott McKenna before the transfer deadline, according to Sky Sports.

According to the news outlet’s live transfer blog (30 January, 12:10),

the central defender wants to go for more regular play ahead of Euro 2024 in the summer.

Rangers and Celtic were linked with a bid for the former Aberdeen defender earlier in the transfer year,

but he now appears poised to join Champions League rivals Copenhagen before his contract ends in the summer.

“FC Copenhagen have entered negotiations with Forest over a deal that would take Scottish international Scott McKenna to Denmark,” they said in a statement.

“McKenna is reported to be interested in the move in order to gain more regular playing time leading up to Scotland’s participation in the Euros this summer.

“McKenna, who has also been linked with Rangers,

hasn’t appeared for Forest in the Premier League since September.

“McKenna’s Forest contract expires in June,

and so any agreement with Copenhagen is expected to mark an end to his time at the City Ground.”

That makes sense.

Rangers were connected with a deal for McKenna because Philippe Clement was said to be looking for a new central defender this month, but it appears that information was inaccurate.

As the month progressed, we saw less ties to centre-backs,

so a move for McKenna never seemed possible,

but because he is Scottish and looking for more regular game time,

a link to Glasgow’s largest club made logical sense and was simple to arrange.

Ultimately, with Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, John Souttar,

Leon Balogun, and even Leon King all available to play in that position,

it was not a priority during the transfer window.

Copenhagen can offer him regular football and the opportunity to play in the Champions League,

making them an appealing alternative.

It’s a move that makes sense for everyone, including the Rangers,

especially since other transactions must be finalized before Thursday’s deadline.
