Barry Ferguson has revealed that he is surprised that English clubs

have not tried to recruit Lawrence Shankland this summer,

but believes he would make a “brilliant” last-minute addition to Rangers.

The Scotland international has been linked with a move to Ibrox during the January transfer window as Philippe Clement

attempts to strengthen his forward line, but no deal has been completed as the deadline approaches.

While Cyriel Dessers has found his footing at Ibrox,

Ferguson believes the Light Blues should try to recruit Shankland before the Thursday (1 February) deadline,

predicting he’d score a “barrel load” of goals under Clement.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (29 January, 1:00:40),

he said: “I still think they need to go and get a number nine because you don’t know what happens with Danilo,

and Kemar Roofe has experienced so many injuries.

Sima is another player that could have played across the middle, but he will be missing.

“I still believe that is an area of the pitch that needs to be strengthened,

and I believe Lawrence Shankland has been one of the most improved players in Scottish football in the last year.

“His whole game has improved so much; we know he can score, but his link-up play, his powerful upper body,

his ability to hold up centre-halves, bring players into play, his mobility,

everything about him makes me believe he’s a very, very excellent centre-forward.

“I’m surprised other clubs, particularly those in the south, aren’t looking at him because they believe he’d perform well.

If I’m talking about Rangers, he would undoubtedly come in and score a slew of goals.

I think he would do an excellent job.”

Get it done!

This subject has dominated the January transfer window at Rangers,

and it doesn’t look to be any closer now than it was all the way back  at Christmas.

Rangers are in need of a new number nine, and Shankland appears to be the ideal candidate given his superb play for

Hearts this season and his constantly excellent record in the Scottish Premiership.

However, time is running out for Clement and his recruitment squad to finalise a deal,

and the Gers must act quickly if they want to bring the Hearts forward to Glasgow before the January window closes.

This transaction is a no-brainer for all parties involved assuming the Rangers have the financial resources to complete it.

Hopefully, they will be able to act before it is too late.
