Noles247 attended the tournament and saw multiple games on Saturday and Sunday that Jones participated in. The complete video
highlights of the Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin standout from the competition this past weekend are available here:
I was pleasantly surprised with Tramell Jones. After seeing Jones play at a spring jamboree event the previous year, I became a fan.
College coaches present at that jamboree agreed that Jones was getting better after witnessing him train at FSU throughout the
summer the previous year. There was a lot of buzz about him
going into the Battle Miami competition because of his abilities.
during a 7-on-7 session the previous evening with his South Florida Express club. Numerous individuals I conversed with in that
establishment extolled Jones’s qualities and expressed how much he had impressed them during that exercise.
When it came time for the game, Jones was all over the field, hitting his wide receiver targets, including five-star Jaime Ffrench, four-
star Marcus Harris, four-star Jayvan Boggs, and four-star
Brown Vernell. One of Jones’s strengths is his ability to put zip on the football and his rapid release. The ball shoots out of his hand
and usually lands in the path of a receiver.
In addition, Jones demonstrated his ability to complete passes at different arm angles, which is a skill that is increasingly valued in
today’s game. On other occasions, he made side-arm tosses down field that were absolutely accurate. I think that was the most
amazing thing Jones did during the entire weekend.
— Jones needs to do a better job of moving the ball downfield. Although he possesses the arm strength to complete the task, in the
games I observed him play, he tended to take shorter or more intermediate routes. The apparent warning is that since players aren’t
using the entire field in 7-on-7 football, there won’t be many deep shots. I would like to see him develop in that part of his game during
his senior year at Mandarin, though, after watching him play for his high school team and on tape.
— I walked away from the two-day event more impressed with Jones as a prospect than I did coming in. That speaks to the performance he put on while in South Florida. I’m excited to see how his game improves
over the offseason leading up to his senior year.
