Player still at Auchenhowie as Rangers accept bid to sell him, USA-based reps in talks – report
Jose Cifuentes remains in Auchenhowie after bid acceptance, according to Rangers transfer news.
The Daily Record claims that even though Rangers accepted a proposal for Jose Cifuentes to go, he is
still in Scotland.
The Ecuadorian midfielder trained in Auchenhowie earlier that day while his US-based representatives
were in Turkey negotiating with Rizespor, according to a story published on the paper’s website on
January 28.
Rangers has agreed to accept a £2 million loan-to-buy deal from the Super Lig club, although the
summer signing from Ibrox has not yet left to finalize the transfer.
Cifuentes only cost £1.2 million when he moved from LAFC in the summer [Sky Sports, 4 August].
Despite his early promise, Cifuentes has struggled in Glasgow, making just nine of his 20 SPFL games.
Inertia
Everyone can see that Cifuentes’ move to the Rangers hasn’t worked out, and the chance that the
summer arrival would receive more of a look in has actually lessened with the arrival of Mohamed
Diomande on a big-money deal.
Ibrox seems to be experiencing injury crises all the time, but Cifuentes wasn’t even able to capitalize on
his opportunity the last time one struck the midfield. He was, quite unfairly, sent off and suspended for
the Viaplay Cup final, even though Tom Lawrence, Ryan Jack, and Nico Raskin were already out.
All parties concerned will undoubtedly need to put in extra effort to find a different move before the
deadline if the agents representing the 24-year-old are unable to come to an agreement with Rizespor
that works for him.
If Philippe Clement is certain he has enough possibilities elsewhere, even a straight loan would make
more sense than doing nothing because it doesn’t serve anyone for him to be stuck at Rangers without
playing.
This year’s January transfer window is expected to conclude at Ibrox in a busy manner, but if the
manager is successful in bringing in the players he desires, he may be left with disgruntled players
sitting on the bench without playing time.
The club is obviously glad to see a similar exit for Cifuentes, but time is running out to get things settled
before the deadline. Sam Lammers has already left for FC Utrecht for the remainder of the season, and
having accepted an offer.
In other Rangers news, an update on a potential exit as a result has the Light Blues “certain” to finalize a
new defensive signing
