Cowboys Dan Quinn is among top candidates for final two NFL head coach job openings

Then there were two.

Thursday afternoon became quite fascinating when the Atlanta Falcons ultimately decided on a new head coach,

and despite all of the rumors and conjecture, it was not the great Bill Belichick.

Atlanta chose Raheem Morris, the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams.

When the offseason cycle began, eight NFL teams, accounting for a quarter of the league,

were looking for new head coaches. With only a few sleeps till Conference Championship Sunday,

six of them have filled their positions.

• Tennessee Titans, Brian Callahan
• Los Angeles Chargers, Jim Harbaugh
• Carolina Panthers, Dave Canales
• Atlanta Falcons, Raheem Morris

There are only two clubs left looking: the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks. Once the former hires a head coach, we will have an official list of the new head coaches Dallas will face in 2024. For the time being, we know that the Cowboys will be traveling to face Canales’ Panthers and Morris’ Falcons.

But Dallas will visit and host a new head coach next season, and the Commanders are currently hunting for one. Washington, like Seattle (that’s a strange way to describe it), is relevant to the Cowboys staff because they’ve requested a second interview with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Seattle held their second interview with him on Thursday.

Given that both the Commanders and the Seahawks wanted to speak with Quinn again, it’s safe to assume that both are seriously considering him as their next head coach. There are still plenty of choices on the table, like Bobby Slowik, Mike Vrabel, and Ben Johnson (whose Detroit Lions are presumably still playing), but Quinn clearly has a history with Seattle. He appears to have a good chance of landing one of these positions. We probably won’t know until next week.

Assuming that happens, the Cowboys will clearly need to fill the defensive coordinator position, which they could do through an internal promotion. The Cowboys staff in general is in a dangerous position, with Mike McCarthy entering 2024 in the final year of his contract, so there is considerable uncertainty about everyone involved and their future.

Perhaps McCarthy retires in 2025, while Dan Quinn goes somewhere. If that were to happen, Quinn would certainly not be coaching the Cowboys, as many people once assumed. However, given that Bill Belichick is likely not going to be coaching a team this season and that he still likely wants to chase Don Shula’s all-time victories record, you can bet your bottom dollar that Dallas will be connected to him many times between now and him finding a new home if he ever does.

Time continues to tick and we simply have to wait to see what happens with Dan Quinn.
