Brendan Rodgers Reveals Matt O’Riley Chat Amid Transfer Speculation

On Wednesday, Celtic received a loan with an obligation to purchase proposal from this season’s Champions League rivals, Atletico Madrid. The fee is thought to have been around £20 million.

Brendan Rodgers confirmed during Thursday’s press conference that Matt O’Riley was not going anywhere this season, as reported by CeltsAreHere yesterday.

The manager said that he spoke with the midfielder, who has been vital in midfield for Celtic this season, about the bid before confirming that he would stay put in January.

“I had a chat with Matt this morning,” the manager remarked on Celtic TV.

“I’ve always been impressed with Matt’s mentality. How he tackles his work, and clearly the respect he has here.

“We had an opportunity in the summer, but he was pleased to prolong here, which is fantastic.

“Atletico Madrid is a big club, but he clearly recognizes he’s in a good spot here.

“He’s really kicked on this season in his progression and he wants to continue with that.”

Celtic are expecting additional proposals for the midfielder, including interest from Girona, Inter Milan, and Premier League clubs.
