The AFC title game will bring together former Philadelphia coaches Andy Reid and John Harbaugh for a reunion.
Maryland’s OWINGS MILLS It might not be all that emotional to play against someone you used to work with, as
John Harbaugh once defeated his own brother in a Super Bowl.
Nonetheless, the Baltimore coach and Andy Reid of Kansas City, his opponent this weekend, have a great deal of respect for one another.
This week, Harbaugh stated, “Obviously, it’s a big deal in terms of the relationship.” “It has a very, very lengthy
history. Deepest regard for Andy and gratitude for all that he has accomplished as a coach. We spent ten years
together, the first ten of those years in Philadelphia. We participated in numerous playoff and championship games.
When the Ravens host the Chiefs on Sunday, it will be their first meeting as head coaches in a postseason game.
That’s quite amazing considering how successful they’ve been. Reid has won six straight AFC titles with Kansas City,
while Harbaugh is playing in his fourth championship game with Baltimore.
Since they parted ways while Harbaugh was head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid has a 5-2 advantage in their
head-to-head series.
John performs an amazing job. Reid added, ‘He knows the full game. “He has been an excellent head coach as well as
a fantastic secondary, special teams, and head coach. Extremely pleased of everything he has accomplished.
When Reid took over as coordinator the next season, Harbaugh served as the Eagles’ special teams coordinator for
eight seasons after serving in that capacity under Ray Rhodes in 1998.
For a year or two, Ray Rhodes was a great presence. I’d like to thank Ray, if he’s listening, very much. I’m always
grateful for the knowledge Ray gave me,” Harbaugh remarked. I was hoping to stay when Andy entered, and he
offered me the chance to do so. I was naive and impressionable.
Reid claimed to have known Jack Harbaugh, the father of Harbaugh, prior to having John work for him in
Philadelphia.
“The best was his dad.” He and LaVell Edwards were quite close (at BYU). I once worked with them on an
assignment at a hospital. I was carrying Coach Edwards’ bag as a rookie coach. As I got to know them, we realized
that we were the three coaches from the entire convention who had come to the hospital, according to Reid. “The few
days we spent together were wonderful. I will never forget it. I was thinking, “If you’re half as good as your dad,
you’re on,” when I first met John. He has been that, too.
In 2007, Harbaugh joined Philadelphia as a backup coach before taking over the Ravens the following year. In his
fifth season in Baltimore, he was the Super Bowl victor. San Francisco, who were led at the time by his brother Jim,
was his opponent in the game.
The Chiefs under Reid have been the AFC’s team to beat lately. They have won two Super Bowls, one of which
occurred last year, to go along with their run of six consecutive conference championship games.
With Harbaugh in his corner, Reid also made it to four consecutive NFC title games in Philadelphia.
In addition to Harbaugh, Reid’s coaching tree also includes Doug Pederson, the head coach of the other Super Bowl-
winning team, and Sean McDermott of the Buffalo Bills, who Kansas City upset this past weekend.
Harbaugh remarked, “You consider all the outstanding coaches that were part of that staff that Andy put together,
guided, and taught us all so much. We were a loving staff of guys that were close to one another. I notice a lot of that
among the Ravens crew as well.
It’s been a while since he and Reid co-coached, but a few of the lessons are still readily remembered.
I often tell this anecdote. One of Andy’s things was that he had this three-by-five card on his bulletin board behind
his desk. It simply stated, “Don’t judge.” stated Harbaugh. “One time, I had the audacity to question him about it,
and he essentially told me it was a biblical teaching. Meet individuals where they are. Hope for the best. Make an
effort to speak with everyone on an equal footing. I will always remember that.
