Jamie Murphy, a former Rangers star troubled by injuries, is expected to make a comeback to Ibrox after the team drew Ayr United in the Scottish Cup fifth round.

After joining the Honest Men in the summer, the 34-year-old winger participated in 76 minutes of action as the Championship team defeated Kelty Hearts 3-0 in the fourth round.

Fans of Rangers will recall Jamie Murphy from his time in Glasgow, where he suffered a horrific cruciate ligament injury on the artificial turf of Kilmarnock in 2018. Murphy’s future at Rangers appeared to be sealed with the injury, as the winger went on loan to Burton Albion and Hibs before making the move to Edinburgh permanently in 2021.

Murphy then had time at Mansfield Town and St Johnstone, where he battled with consistency. Jamie Murphy, who currently plays for Ayr United, will be going back to his childhood team when his new team plays Rangers in the Scottish Cup next round.

Ayr United and Rangers draw in the Scottish Cup.

Rangers defeated the League Two team 4-1 to advance to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup, overcoming the wind and rain in Dumbarton. Philippe Clement’s team won the match. Rangers’ opponent, Ayr United, presents an opportunity for the Honest Men to show their superiority, even if the Gers are still the clear favorites in this match.

Just one week separates Ayr United from the dismissal of Lee Bullen, and with Davie White serving as interim manager, it is still unknown who will be the Rangers manager’s opposite number at Ibrox. The game is scheduled to take place at Ibrox over the weekend of February 10.

A fascinating side story leading up to Ayr United’s Scottish Cup matchup against Rangers is Jamie Murphy’s comeback.

Murphy, who was originally brought in on loan from Brighton in the Premier League, seemed to be becoming a vital member of Steven Gerrard’s revamped Ibrox team.

In fact, Murphy opened the score in a 2-0 victory over KF Shkuphi at home to score the first goal of the legendary Liverpool player’s reign.

However, the winger’s dreams of playing at Ibrox were crushed by that heartbreaking injury he sustained against Kilmarnock, and it’s possible that this will be the last time the former Scotland international visits the storied stadium.
While Rangers’ primary goal is to advance to the Quarterfinals, it’s possible that the now-Ayr United winger is planning a last-gasp Ibrox moment.
