Journalist Andy Newport of the Daily Record claims that Rangers manager Philippe Clement has a “glaring requirement” to recruit a

center forward during the remaining January transfer window. To increase their attacking options, the Light Blues signed Fabio Silva

on loan from Wolves, but they are allegedly still looking for a more versatile striker.

Newport, writing in the Record’s print edition on Saturday (20 January, page 49), says doing so is essential if Rangers are to continue

fighting with Celtic in the second half of the season.

“A proper centre-forward is the glaring requirement,” he wrote.

“Cyriel Dessers isn’t the answer and Fabio Silva looks like he’s better suited to coming in off the left wing.

“Gers need an out and out No.9 if they are to properly push Celtic.”

Undoubtedly, the Rangers require additional firepower before the window closes.

Much of the burden has been on Cyriel Dessers, who, to be honest, is not going to be a reliable enough supply of goals to bring the title

to Ibrox, with Danilo down for an extended period of time and Kemar Roofe unable to maintain fitness.

Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland has undoubtedly been strongly projected to join the team; he would be a great addition, but the longer

this goes on, the more challenging it seems that the transaction will be to close.

But whether it’s Shankland for someone else, Clement could really do with another forward option, one who is a more traditional fox-in-the-box type striker.

Clement has worked wonders to get Rangers’ season back on track after the disaster under Michael Beale and the board really has to

back him this month to give him the tools he needs to challenge Celtic.
