Six new signings en route to West Ham, as Julen Lopetegui gears up for a major summer rebuild
West Ham United are apparently preparing for an extremely busy summer transfer window.
Julen Lopetegui needs to make significant changes to the West Ham squad following years of bad
planning by David Moyes. We informed you yesterday that Lopetegui has been tasked with pushing
the Hammers back into the Premier League’s top six.
To accomplish this, the Spaniard is reportedly prioritizing moves to improve his back four and
center forward position.
West Ham have enjoyed relative success over the last four years, and Lopetegui now confronts the
challenge of emulating Moyes’ achievements.
With that in mind, it was somewhat disappointing to learn yesterday that the 57-year-old Hammers
manager will have a net spending budget of roughly £85-100 million this summer.
Given the necessity for so many new recruits, that may not appear to be a large sum of money, but
Tim Steidten developed the current Bayer Leverkusen squad on a shoestring budget.
And the German will need to work closely with Lopetegui to develop a strategy that would allow the club to have a successful summer transfer window.
West Ham fans will be well aware of Lopetegui’s struggle ahead.
One of his first aims should be to lower the average age of the squad. West Ham’s team now has an
average age of 28.2 years, making them the second oldest in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).
Before thinking about that, Lopetegui just needs to move bodies through the entrance, especially
when up to 12 Hammers are linked with the exit door at the London Stadium.
According to the Evening Standard, at least six new signings will be heading to the London Stadium this summer.
I believe he needs to sign at least eight new players, and possibly more.
Fabricio Bruno appears to be Lopetegui’s first signing, but the Spaniard and his partner in crime
Steidten have certainly spotted many more.
The objective will be for the former Wolves manager to bring in players that fit his system. Far too
frequently in the past, West Ham have bought players who are painfully unsuited to the sort of
game we play, particularly under Moyes. It’s time for a fresh start, with a more professional
approach to player recruitment. Let’s hope that the players Lopetegui signs this summer are not
just top-tier, but also fantastic fits for his team.
