Paul Pierce: Lakers hung In-Season Tournament banner to ‘spite Celtics’
As a member of the Boston Celtics, Paul
Pierce played the Los Angeles Lakers
twice in the NBA Finals. He won the
Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2008 but lost to
LA in 2010. He is aware of what it takes
to get to the Finals and ultimately win everything.
Pierce objected to the Lakers raising a
banner to the Crypto.com Arena rafters
in celebration of winning the In-Season Tournament.
On SHOWTIME Basketball’s “Ticket and
The Truth,” Pierce remarked to former
teammate Kevin Garnett, “They did that
to spite the Celtics, bro.” “I am informing
you because we received 17. Does that apply to the 17 then? 17.5?
Pierce proposed that instead of raising a
banner, the Lakers ought to have gotten a plaque.
Pierce advised, “Just put it in the locker room.”
After winning the first tournament, the
Lakers have faced many challenges. They
have lost their last ten games and are
currently ranked ninth in the Western Conference.
With 17, the Lakers and the Celtics share
the record for the most NBA titles.
Despite not having won Banner 18,
Boston has gone close, making it to the
NBA Finals in 2021 under first-year
coach Ime Udoka. With a 25-6 record
heading into their matchup with the San
Antonio Spurs on Sunday, the Celtics lead
the Eastern Conference standings and
have assembled a team that should keep
them competitive as they aim to make a deep postseason run.
