“He is a winner, but it can’t be all suffering”: Rafael Nadal shouldn’t lose faith if comeback doesn’t succeed immediately says Alex Corretja
Rafael Nadal is scheduled to return for the 2024 season after nearly a year off,
but tennis analyst Alex Corretja thinks the Spaniard might have more than just physical problems in that year.
Since sustaining a hip injury at the Australian Open in 2023, which prevented him from playing over the full season,
Rafael Nadal has been sidelined. Nonetheless, the 2024 Brisbane International,
which takes place from December 31, 2023, to January 7, 2024, will see the comeback of the former World No. 1 player.
According to Corretja, Nadal shouldn’t worry too much about the outcome.
In an interview with Eurosport, Corretja stated,
“Even just thinking and saying Rafa’s name gets me excited because of everything he transmits,
the hopes that his return has generated, seeing that he is eager to compete again.”
“In my opinion, the outcomes won’t really matter that much.
He will always have the winning gene in him until he departs. I don’t care if he wins a lot of matches or not,
but if he is in good physical condition and has no issues,
I think we will see a Rafa who takes home major titles once more.”
In addition, the ex-player admits that Nadal will need to watch how much he plays during the season to stay fit.
The 22-time Grand Slam winner will still need to play a style of play,
though, if he wants to contend with the finest players on the circuit.
“I believe that Rafa needs matches that are lengthy, but not excruciatingly long,
so he doesn’t suffer too much,” Corretja continued.
“I believe he is at a career turning point when he needs to figure out how to play with a certain joy.
I know that he is a winner and that success is what he enjoys, but pain is not acceptable.
