John Hartson urges Rangers to complete multi-million signing in January, could win them title
Rangers “have to” acquire Lawrence Shankland in January, according to John Hartson,
if they want to challenge Celtic’s hegemony in the Scottish Premiership.
Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic is currently leading Philippe Clement’s Light Blues in the Premiership by five points,
but the Gers have two games remaining and might cut the deficit to two points
if they win the Old Firm match at Celtic Park.
Hartson feels that Rangers still need a new number nine in order to win the title this season,
even if they have a fantastic chance of beating the Hoops to it.
He suggests that signing Shankland is now imperative.
In an interview with Go Radio Football Show (December 27, 32:50), he stated:
“I believe Rangers need to focus on the present.”
Rangers need to go acquire Shankland right away,
in my opinion, if they want to challenge Celtic for the championship should he become available.
“Rangers might win the title this season if they can get him for £3 million,
and Shankland could score eight more goals for them if that happens.
You don’t look too far ahead; instead, you act in the now.
“Look at how dominant Celtic has been for the past twelve years.
You want to end that dominance,
and the quickest way to do that is to bring in a center-forward and finish this season.”
“You could potentially win the title and deal with whatever comes up in the summer.”
Put an end to the domination
Shankland would address Rangers’ need for a center-forward who can
score 20 goals a season in the Scottish Premiership,
as it has been evident during the season’s early going.
The Scottish international’s goal against Hibernian on Wednesday, December 27,
demonstrated his clinical and effective finishing touch as he quietly entered
the game’s final minutes to win the Edinburgh derby.
As Hartson stated, Shankland’s goals in the second half of the season might make all
the difference in the race for the Premiership title,
and Rangers’ chances of winning silverware will only increase with the 28-year-old on the team.
It remains to be seen if it is as simple as the Welshman has proposed, and when January arrives,
Clement might have different goals in mind.
However, it’s evident that the majority of Scots think Shankland might be the ideal choice.
