Unai Emery recommended PL star rejected joining Leeds from Arsenal back in 2019
Unai Emery recommended PL star rejected joining Leeds from Arsenal back in 2019
In January 2019, Unai Emery advised Emiliano Martinez to turn down a loan transfer to Leeds United,
stating that the custodian for Arsenal at the time would be better off joining Reading.
Nowadays, Emiliano Martinez is regarded as one of the world’s top goalkeepers.
He has contributed to Argentina’s World Cup and Copa America victories.
Additionally, he is a member of the Aston Villa team that is now vying for the Premier League championship.
Martinez has been working with Unai Emery over the past year;
Aston Villa hired the Spaniard not long after Andrea Radrizzani thought
about trying to replace Jesse Marsch with Emery.
Emiliano Martinez should reject Leeds in 2019, according to Unai Emery.
Martinez and Emery have already collaborated at Arsenal before to the manager’s dismissal in 2019.
Therefore, this is not their first time working together.
Martinez was linked to a move to Leeds early in his career,
just like Emery. Prior to signing Kiko Casilla, the Whites were interested in the custodian,
according to a January 2019 Daily Mail story.
Furthermore, it appears that Emery was a major factor in Leeds’ decision not to sign Martinez.
Emery reportedly advised the 31-year-old that he would be better off joining Reading,
according to The Times this past weekend.
Because the Royals were further down the table,
Emery believed Martinez would be under more pressure.
How things might have turned out differently in history
It would be intriguing to find out if Leeds’ history would have been much different
if Martinez had been acquired during that window.
Casilla would eventually come aboard.
However, he would turn out to be an incredibly disappointing acquisition in many aspects.
He did contribute to our next season’s advancement.
However, Casilla committed a lot of errors while holding the top spot,
most notably in the play-off semifinal second leg when Marcelo Bielsa’s team seemed to be coasting to Wembley.
Of course, not many could have predicted Martinez’s future brilliance.
But maybe the Whites would have attempted to make the trade permanent
if he had signed with Leeds on loan in January and helped us get promoted.
