Mason Holgate, an Everton defender,

is expected to have his Southampton loan terminated,

and Carlton Palmer thinks Rangers will be the front-runners to recruit him in January.

The defender may now be called up by the

Toffees and sent abroad to

play more after struggling to feature consistently since

joining the Saints on a season-long loan in the summer.

Rangers, Watford, and Middlesbrough have all

been connected (The Sun, December 11).

However, Palmer thought Rangers might be “too big a draw”

for the Championship clubs to compete with when questioned

about the situation by Football League World on December 13.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Palmer stated,

“Middlesbrough and Watford join the race with Glasgow Rangers for Mason Holgate,

who’s currently on loan from Southampton.”

With just five appearances and underwhelming play,

Holgate has struggled to establish a first-team spot at St Mary’s.

As a result, Everton is currently preparing to recall him in January.

“After receiving harsh criticism for his Southampton debut against Sunderland in September,

Holgate acknowledged he wasn’t comfortable in his surroundings.

“Defensive cover is desperately needed by Middlesbrough,

and Holgate, at 27, has Premier League experience.

“Everton will be interested in seeing him play wherever he goes,

but Glasgow Rangers may be a bigger lure than Middlesbrough or Watford.”

Big

Rangers are a separate league entirely,

but Everton, Middlesbrough, and Watford are all significant teams that have

played frequently in the Premier League.

The objective facing Philippe Clement in January is to continue to compete for league crowns and prizes,

play in Europe each season, and assemble a formidable squad.

Since Holgate hasn’t been playing much for Southampton,

it appears likely that he will be transferred to

Ibrox if his loan is revoked.

Holgate would fit in well there.

He meets several of the requirements to join the Rangers this winter since he is cheap,

skilled, athletic, and good with the ball.

There would be fierce competition for his spot from players like Connor Goldson,

Ben Davies, John Souttar, and Leon Balogun,

but if he believes in himself and his ability, there’s no reason

he couldn’t pick us over England’s second division.
