John McGinn: One word is banned from the Aston Villa dressing room
John McGinn is banning talk of the title from the Villa dressing room after they beat Arsenal to move within two points of the Premier League summit.
The captain netted the game’s lone goal to help Unai Emery’s team establish a 120-year-old club record by winning 15 straight home league games after their thrilling victory over Manchester City last week.
Villa was named a title contender by City manager Pep Guardiola last week, but McGinn remarked, “I’m banning the T-word.” With 16 games remaining, there is still a long way to go.
“Everyone in our immediate vicinity who has held this position for a long time is respected.” Since we’re novices, we’ll test if we can maintain this pace.
In response to a question concerning the environment in the changing room, McGinn said, “I’m pleasantly surprised by how calm and humble we’ve been.”
“It’s very easy to get carried away. I’ve got my eye on a few who could potentially get carried away but we aren’t. The celebrations are muted. We are proud of where we are but we are completely alien to this.
“We just have to take each game as it comes, as clichéd as it sounds, and see where we go.”
