Harry Winks gives the Foxes a 94th-minute winner to increase their advantage at the top of the Championship.
There were moments when it seemed like this matchup between the early pace setters
in the Championship and its form side wouldn’t live up to the hype.
This was less of a heavyweight sluggers bout and more of a cat and mouse battle for the opening seventy minutes.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall had put the visitors ahead at the Hawthorns,
but Josh Maja, a late substitution, appeared to have given Carlos Corberan’s Baggies—who are on a roll—a late point.
However, there was still one more dramatic turn of events as Leicester
caught the hosts off guard, setting up Winks for a 94th-minute
pounce as Enzo Maresca’s team ultimately emerged victorious.
Returning to the field where Maresca initially broke his teeth as a football player
was a dream come true. More significantly for the Italian, though,
is that the victory ends an unsettling run of poor performance that saw Leicester win just once in the league in November.
West Brom matched the leaders from the outset and got off to a fast start,
although Foxes goalkeeper Mads Hermansen’s erroneous distribution assisted them.
After giving the ball away, the Dane was happy to watch Kipre’s left-footed
attempt from the ensuing corner hit the foot of the post.
Hermansen made another mistake a few moments later, which did little to assist his team win,
and the keeper was able to collect the shot that the industrious Brandon Thomas-Asante had attempted.
However, it seems that no defense in the division can stop this
Leicester team when they find a way to ramp up the offensive.
With the best chance of the half, Semi Ajayi misjudged Semi Aheanacho,
who dragged his effort badly wide, giving the visitors the lead.
With the second half wearing on, the game finally started to open up,
and you could sense that Leicester, who started Abdul Fatawu with new legs out wide,
was in the lead. Wilfred Ndidi and Fatawu together,
When Ndidi’s clipped ball across the box reached Dewsbury-Hall,
who perfectly timed his run from midfield and headed home from inside the box,
the match was finally ended. It was the identical combination.
With just minutes of regular time left, Leicester appeared to have thrown away their three points.
Maja was able to pounce and finish the play after Maresca’s
team failed five times to clear their lines following a long throw.
The hosts made the most cruel sacrifices in order to justify their desire for a late winner.
When West Brom committed too many men forward in attack and played in Dewsbury-Hall,
Iheanacho led the rapid break. The midfielder squared it to instead of going for his second.
